The Battle of Mount Dingjun took place in China during the Three Kingdoms Period in 219 . Of the two powers Wei and Shu , veterans Xiahou Yuan and Huang Zhong faced each other.

Xiahou Yuan camped on Dingjun Mountain to observe the Shu camp at the foot of the mountain. On Fa Zheng's advice, Huang Zhong moved his camp to Mount Tiandang, the top of which was higher than Mount Dingjun. With that, Shu had taken the strategically most favorable point. Xiahou Yuan did not tolerate this position and attacked Huang Zhong, although Zhang He advised against it. Huang Zhong withheld his troops and did not advance against Wei. Fa Zheng later realized that Xiahou Yuan's troop morale was falling. He signaled the attack to Huang Zhong, and because he could not react quickly enough, Xiahou Yuan was overwhelmed and fell.

The confrontation between Huang Zhong and Xiahou Yuan is heavily embellished and dramatized in chapter 71 of Luo Guanzhong's novel The Tale of the Three Kingdoms .

The battle is also a famous Peking Opera theme , especially during the New Year . The first Chinese film, The Battle of Dingjunshan , was a recording of a Peking Opera from 1905 in which this battle was depicted.
