The Battle of Hulao Pass (虎牢 關 之 戰) was a battle in China in 190 at the beginning of the Three Kingdoms Period .

The warlord Dong Zhuo deposed the young emperor Liu Bian in 189 and raised his younger brother Liu Xie to emperor (as Emperor Xian ) in the capital Luoyang in order to use him as a puppet. His rule displeased the powerful warlords and governors of the empire, who, at Cao Cao's instigation , founded a coalition against Dong Zhuo, led by Yuan Shao . A year later the opponents met for the first time at the Hulao Pass, and the coalition went out in favor. Dong Zhuo then moved the capital from Luoyang to Chang'an (now Xi'an ).

No details of the battle are known from historical sources. The historical novel The Story of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong from the 14th century adorns it with numerous, mostly fictional stories. The three oath brothers Liu Bei , Guan Yu and Zhang Fei fight together against Dong Zhuo's foster son and General Lü Bu , who finally has to withdraw. He then challenged Sun Jian , one of the coalition generals, to a duel. After a tough duel, Sun Jian has to withdraw with his troops.
