The Battle of Tong Pass was a battle between Ma Chao and the warlord Cao Cao to the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China . It is also known as the battle in which Cao Cao was in mortal danger twice. He was finally able to crush Ma Chaos forces and thereby expand his power into Liang Province.

background

In 211 Ma Chao led a coalition of dissidents against Cao Cao. Together with Han Sui , he went to Chang'an and conquered it without significant resistance. With this backing, Ma Chao and his troops moved to the Tong Pass. Cao Cao then executed Ma Teng in Luoyang to punish him for his son's rebellion. (In Luo Guanzhong's Tale of the Three Kingdoms , the situation is reversed: Because Cao Cao murdered Ma Teng, Ma Chao rebelled against him.) Cao Cao immediately sent his generals Cao Hong and Xu Huang with 10,000 men to the Tong Pass and gave the Order to hold my passport for ten days.

The battle

On the ninth day, Cao Hong gave in to the challenges of Ma Chaos and made an illicit failure from the Tong Gate. Xu Huang came to his aid, but even united they had no chance against Ma Chao. He took the passport. Cao Cao personally led the army to retake, but Ma Chao defeated many of his generals, including Yu Jin and Zhang He .

Then Ma Chao Cao Cao attacked himself, who cut off his beard and took off his clothes to escape undetected. Cao Hong and Xiahou Yuan caught up with him and saved him from Ma Chaos troops. To cut off supplies to Ma Chao, Cao Cao led a force to cross the river. However, Ma Chao was prepared and prepared an ambush that Cao Cao was caught in. There Cao Cao only got away with his life because his bodyguard Xu Chu was protecting him. Ma Chao and Xu Zhu fought each other, while Cao Cao escaped. Xu Chu was challenged again by Ma Chao shortly afterwards. This gave Cao Cao time to set up his camp. Because of the weather, he had to build the walls of ice and snow.

To defeat Ma Chao, Cao Cao took advice from his advisor Jia Xu : He pretended to make peace and turned Han Sui and Ma Chao against one another. Ma Chao soon believed that Han Sui was betraying him and making common cause with Cao Cao. He tried to kill him and in the mess he was overrun by Cao Cao's army. Ma Chao escaped with Pang De and his cousin Ma Dai . He later hired himself out to the western warlord Zhang Lu .
