Cao Hong ( Chinese  曹洪 , Pinyin Cáo Hóng ; * 169 ; † 233 ) was a general of the Wei Empire under Cao Cao and Cao Pi at the time of the Three Kingdoms .

Career

Cao Hong was a cousin of Cao Cao. He fought with him against the warlord Dong Zhuo . When he withdrew to Chang'an , the allies stayed in Luoyang , only Cao Cao pursued the fleeing tyrant. He was ambushed and forced to withdraw because he was wounded by Xu Rong (an officer under Dong Zhuo). Cao Hong saved his cousin and took him across the nearby river.

He stayed with Cao Cao even after the dissolution of the coalition against Dong Zhuo and made a decisive contribution to his seizure of power in China.

Disputes

Cao Hong tried to strengthen his position further and often bragged about his successes because of it. He also often taunted his cousin Cao Zhen for being overweight. Cao Hong was warned for this by Yang Fu , a minister of the Wei.

In the campaign against Ma Chao , Cao Hong received the order to guard the Tong Pass and not to leave the fortifications. After Ma Chaos troops provoked him for a few days, Cao Hong gave in to his anger and led his army to battle in the pass. But Ma Chao defeated him and so took the passport.

Cao Cao was very angry about this, but when he was beaten by Ma Chao himself and his life was in danger, Cao Hong rescued him again. So Cao Cao forgave him for his defeat and compared him to Han Gaozu . He gave Cao Hong's adviser a severe warning.

Next life

When Cao Cao died in 220 and his son Cao Pi succeeded him to the throne, Cao Hong's position was in danger. The relationship between the two had been strained for a long time because Cao Pi asked him for a loan, but Cao Hong wrongly refused it. Cao Pi soon used the misdemeanor of one of Cao Hong's guests to arrest him. Only the Empress Mother Bian could save Cao Hong.

Cao Hong's life was spared, but Cao Pi stole his land, property and title. Cao Hong passed away with his family.
