Roman Empire
After the death of their father Septimius Severus on February 4, the two deadly enemies, Caracalla and Geta , become joint rulers in the Roman Empire according to his wishes . A dual empire of rulers with equal rights is not provided for in the Roman system and could only be implemented by dividing the empire.
Since Geta is popular with the soldiers, Caracalla, who shortly after his accession to the throne had his former wife Fulvia Plautilla murdered in her exile in Lipari , does not dare to openly take action against him for the time being. The brothers renounce a continuation of the campaign in Britain and return to Rome. There they both protect themselves from each other through careful guarding. The urban population, the Praetorians and the troops stationed in the capital and its surroundings are divided or undecided, so that a civil war appears to be imminent. In December, however, Caracalla manages to lure her brother into an ambush. He causes the mother of the two, Julia Domna , to invite her sons to a reconciliation talk. Recklessly, Geta thinks he is safe from his brother in the presence of her mother. Caracalla has him killed in the presence of the unsuspecting mother, and she is also injured.
Then the damnatio memoriae is imposed on Geta and the eradication of his name in all public monuments and documents is carried out with the greatest thoroughness. Caracalla immediately had thousands (allegedly around 20,000 people of both sexes) killed who were believed to be Geta's supporters. The now sole ruler justifies the fratricide publicly by stating that he only anticipated one attack by Geta.
