The SNCAC NC.211 Cormoran was a four-engine transport and commercial aircraft produced by the French manufacturer Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Center . She could carry up to 131 passengers on two decks one above the other, but had only a limited range. Two prototypes and four series aircraft were created that were intended to be used exclusively as cargo aircraft, but were no longer flown.

history

The NC.211 was the successor to the Farman F.220 . Development began before the end of World War II . The prototype made its maiden flight on July 20, 1948, but was lost. The maiden flight of the second prototype took place on April 9, 1949. After 27 test flights, the program was discontinued.

Although there were initially orders for 14 aircraft, production ended after the fourth series machine. The range of 2,000 kilometers turned out to be too short for such a large aircraft. The French military refused procurement because it was not possible to deposit loads in flight.

construction

The NC.211 was designed as a shoulder- wing aircraft and had a retractable three-legged landing gear. The lower cargo deck could be loaded via a hinged bow. An additional cargo door was attached to the left. The upper deck accommodated the cockpit and a cabin for seven crew members.

In the unrealized passenger variant, 13 seats were provided on the upper deck and 87 seats on the lower level. A maximum of 131 people could have been transported.

The drive consisted of four Gnôme Rhône 14R radial engines . The three-blade propellers had a diameter of 4 meters.

Incidents

On July 20, 1948, the prototype of the SNCAC NC.211 Cormoran crashed on its maiden flight about 20 minutes after take-off. It was to be transferred from Toussus-le-Noble airfield , where it was built, to the Villacoublay military airfield for flight testing . On approach, he fell from a height of 250 meters about one kilometer east of the Villacoublay destination airfield into a forest when the flaps were extended to the 40 ° position. The machine caught fire and burned out. All five crew members were killed.
