Sūn Jiān ( Chinese  孫堅  /  孙坚 , IPA ( standard Chinese) [ [su̯ən˥ d̥ʑ̥i̯ɛn˥] ], W.-G. Sun Chien ), age name Wéntái ( 文 台 ; * 155 ; † 191 ) was a general of the Eastern Han dynasty . During the collapse of the Han Dynasty, he fought the uprising of the Yellow Turban and joined the coalition against the usurper Dong Zhuo under Governor Yuan Shu . After the coalition dissolved, Sun Jian continued to fight for Yuan Shu in the civil war and fell during an attack on Governor Liu Biao .

His son Sun Quan declared himself Emperor of the Wu Dynasty in 229 and posthumously appointed Sun Jian Emperor Wǔliè ( 武烈皇 帝 ).

After the Yellow Turban Revolt , he became governor of Chang Sha Province. Together with Liu Bei and Cao Cao , he defeated Dong Zhuo . At the Hulao Gate he found the imperial seal, the legitimation of the Han, hidden in a well. He secretly made it an heirloom of his home.

He allied himself with Yuan Shu in the fight against Dong Zhuo in 190 . Although Sun Jian did not have many resources and troops, Dong Zhuo saw him as a serious threat and placed him in line with the powerful warlords Yuan Shu, Yuan Shao and Liu Biao . After the coalition against Dong Zhuo broke up in 191, civil war broke out in China. Sun Jian was defeated and killed by Liu Biao in the second (according to other sources, third) year of the Chuping era . His son Sun Ce then joined Yuan Shu.
