Yuan Shu ( Chinese  袁術  /  袁术 , Pinyin Yuán Shù , * 155 ; † 199 ), came of age Gonlu ( 公路 ) was one of the most important warlords during the late Eastern Han Dynasty , who gained prominence when the imperial court collapsed in 189. He was a younger half-brother of Yuan Shao .

After He Jin's death, he and his troops (he was Imperial Corps Commander of the Imperial Tiger Guard) killed the eunuchs who had just fled the capital. He later joined the anti- Dong Zhuo coalition led by Yuan Shao. After the dissolution of the coalition, he fell out with Yuan Shao.

Yuan Shu fled to Shouchun after repeated defeats to Cao Cao and Yuan Shao. In 195 he declared himself emperor of the short-lived Cheng dynasty by virtue of the Imperial Jade Seal he had received from Sun Ce . This daring political maneuver brought him into irreconcilable opposition to all other warlords. His extravagant lifestyle and arrogance made him hated by his officers, so that many deserted, including Sun Ce. After a devastating defeat by the armies of Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Lü Bu , Yuan Shu tried to flee north to Yuan Shao. But he fell ill and died before he could reach his half-brother.
