The Mount Katahdin is with a height of 1,606  m (ft 5273) the highest mountain in the State of Maine . It is the center of Baxter State Park , a large nature reserve. The Appalachian Trail ends at its highest peak, Baxter Peak . The name comes from the Penobscot tribes living in the area , who called it Ktaadn , and means something like "Great Mountain".

history

The first known sighting of the mountain by a non-local was reported by Joseph Chadwick in 1764. The first known ascent of the summit took place in 1804 by a team of twelve mountain hikers under the direction of Charles Turner Jr. instead of. Further ascents followed in 1819 and 1820. The local Indian tribes avoided the summit because, according to legend, a demon would have set up camp there and would only fly to the warm south in winter with a great din.

A fixed base camp for ascents has been available since 1877, and since 1930 the massif has been an important part of the then established Baxter State Park, the largest nature reserve north of the Mississippi. The Appalachian Trail has ended on the highest of the three peaks of the massif since 1938.

Intensive forest clearing was carried out on its slopes until the 1920s. In the meantime, as before the intervention of the loggers, the slopes are covered with thick pine forests again up to the tree line.

Location and surroundings

The massif is found near the middle of the eastern boundary of Piscataquis County and forms the southern third of Baxter State Park. The water-rich west arm and the smaller east arm of the Penobscot River unite at its feet . Mount Katahdin is not accessible by car; the closest car park is at the “Chimney pond campground”, the nearest larger town is Millinocket , about 40 km southeast, and the nearest airport is Bangor .

height

Mount Katahdin is divided into three mountain peaks that have their own names:

  • Baxter Peak ( 1606  m , corresponding to 5273 ft), in the west of the massif
  • South Peak ( 1596  m , corresponding to 5240 ft), in the middle of the three peaks
  • Pamola Peak ( 1,493  m , corresponding to 4902 ft), in the east of the massif

Others

Two ships of the US Navy were named " USS Katahdin "; in addition, a 1914 steamship owned by the Moosehead Marine Museum and cruising on Moosehead Lake was named after the mountain.
