Hanzhong ( Chinese 漢中 市 / 汉中 市 , Pinyin Hànzhōng shì , W.-G. Hanchung ) is a district-free city in the northwestern Chinese province of Shaanxi . Hanzhong has an area of 27,246 km² and about 3.74 million inhabitants (end of 2004).
history
The city was called Nanzheng (南鄭 \ 南郑, Nánzhèng) until the time of the Han dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD ) and was the center of the state of Han . It played a strategically important role during the Three Kingdoms period because it guarded an important pass to Sichuan . In the 2nd century, the Daoist sky master movement was formed here under the protection of governor Zhang Daoling . After the warlord Cao Cao briefly occupied the city (215-219), it was snatched from him by Liu Bei after the battle of Mount Dingjun . It formed the basis of his campaigns and that of his successor Liu Shan for the next 45 years , before it fell victim to an invasion of the Wei Dynasty and was conquered in 263.
The city was on Baoye Street , an important Shu Street . Its remains, a stone gate and rock inscriptions on Baoye Street (褒 斜 道 石门 及其 摩崖 石刻, Bāoyé dào shímén jíqí móyá shíkè ) from the Han to Song period stand together with the Eastern Pagoda of Hanzhong (汉中东 塔, Hànzhōng dōng tǎ ), on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .
geography
Hanzhong is located in the southwestern part of Shaanxi, in the middle of the Hanzhong Basin , on the Han River , near the border with Sichuan . The city is 500 m high. The annual mean temperature is 14.3 ° C.
economy
Hanzhong is a major agricultural and trade center and has wood and light industrial facilities. The first western pharmaceutical company with a manufacturing facility in China, Janssen Pharmaceutica , set up shop in Hanzhong in 1985.
