Turnhout [ ˈtɵrnhɑʊ̯t ] ( Province of Antwerp ) is a municipality in the Kempen , a landscape that is spread across northern Belgium and the southern Netherlands. It is conveniently located on the European route 34 between the port cities of Antwerp and Duisburg .
history
At the site of the castle of the Dukes of Brabant , village structures first developed in the Middle Ages , which later received city status, the so-called "City and Freedom" (City end Vrijheit). In the course of the Middle Ages, Turnhout continuously developed into an important center of trade and handicrafts. In particular, the cloth trade and twilight weaving were widespread occupations in the city. These branches of business flourished for several centuries until Philippus Jacobus Brepols settled the paper industry in the city in the 19th century and became the largest employer.
In 1597, Moritz von Orange defeated the Spaniards in the Battle of Turnhout and thus contributed to the liberation of the seven provinces .
Surname
Turnhout is mostly derived from "thorn wood", an early name for the forest around the castle. Occasionally the name is also interpreted as "(castle) gate into the surrounding wood (the surrounding forest)".
economy
Turnhout is now a center of the graphics industry. The city is home to the Flemish Center for Innovation for the Graphic Industry . The city is also known for the production of playing cards. One of the world market leaders, the company Carta Mundi, is based there. There is also paper processing, metal industry, electrical industry, food processing and logistics.
Soudal , the manufacturer of sealants and adhesives made from PU foams , founded in Antwerp in 1966 , has its headquarters with main production in Turnhout.
