Lille , also Sint-Pieters-Lille , is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp , administratively and legally it belongs to the Arrondissement Turnhout , to the legal canton of Herentals, in the north Kempen.

Lille is 1,846 hectares and had 3,818 inhabitants in 1974, while in 1920 it had 1,353. On January 1, 2019, the municipality had 16,529 inhabitants. The landscape is flat. The community lies at an altitude of 13 to 20 m above sea level. NN In the south there is a small relief of small land dunes. The soil is mainly sandy. The working population mainly commutes to nearby Antwerp. Agriculture also played an important role until the 1970s.

Attractions

In Lille there is the Sint-Pieters church with a Gothic tower from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. A "Crucifixion of St. Peter" by Theodoor Boeyermans (1663) hangs on the main altar. The restored choir stalls date from 1673.

history

First mentioned in a document in a document of the Bishop of Cambrai in 1123 cum Lisleo , and in 1157 as Linlo from the Germanic lindo- and lauha (small wood on high sandy soil). Originally, Lille was dependent on Vorselaar; later it was part of the Turnhout quarter in the margraviate of Antwerp . Philip the Good gave it to Ambrosius de Dynter as a fief. In 1560 it was pledged to Gaspar Schetz, Mr. von Grobbendonk. In the 18th century it is tied to Turnhout. Before 1560, Lille was part of the Cambrai diocese. Then until 1802 from the diocese of Antwerp. Until 1962 it belonged to the Archdiocese of Mechelen. Since then it has belonged to the Antwerp diocese again.
