Merksplas is a Belgian municipality in the province of Antwerp in Flanders and lies on the border with the Netherlands . Merksplas has 8600 inhabitants (as of January 1st, 2019) on 44.56 km², which corresponds to a population density of 193 inhabitants per km². The landmark of the place is the "Spetser", a sculpture by Kris Druyts that stands on the market square. From 1824 to 1993 there was a prison in Merksplas, the building is now partially used to accommodate illegal immigrants.
