Industry and research
Mol houses the Study Center for Nuclear Energy (SCK • CEN), the largest and most important nuclear research center in the country. Over 600 scientists and technicians are mainly employed there in the fields of nuclear safety, research in the waste disposal sector, radiation protection and safeguards. The center was founded on April 9, 1952 and converted into a body under public law in 1957. The centre's non-nuclear activities were relocated to the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) in 1991. From 1967 to 1974 the reprocessing plant Eurochemic was operated in Mol . In addition to the research facilities of SCK • CEN, the fuel element factories for uranium and mixed oxide fuel elements that are still in operation are located in Mol.
In the village of Gompel , which belongs to the municipality, there is a glass factory.
Attractions
- In the far north of the municipality, on the border with the Netherlands , the village of Postel is located in a wooded area . It is known for the more than 900 year old abbey of the same name, where the famous Postel abbey beer is brewed and fine cheese is made. The abbey can be visited with a guide and has a small restaurant.
- In other parts of the municipality, too, you can go on beautiful hikes in forests and heathland areas.
- In the nearby hamlet of Achterbos there is a Way of the Cross with 15 whitewashed memorial chapels .
- Ezaart has a historic windmill (1856) and a Chapel of the Cross with linden trees . Ezaart also received an old chapel dedicated to St. Willibrord . The exact date of the building is unknown, but documents from 1494 already mention this chapel.
- In the center of Mol is the massive, remarkable Petri and Paulikirche (15th century); in front of her is the town hall (18th - 19th centuries). There are only a few other historical buildings in the village of Mol.
- Every Sunday there is an animal market, the so-called Konijnenmarkt ("rabbit market") on the market square by the Corbiestraat. The Konijnenmarkt has been taking place on this market square since 1880.
