Juschnoukrajinsk (Ukrainian Южноукраїнськ ; Russian Южноукраинск / Juschnoukrainsk ) is a Ukrainian city with 40,000 inhabitants (2016). Juschnoukrajinsk was founded in 1975 and has had the status of an independent city since 1987.
The city is located about 400 km south of Kiev in the Mykolaiv Oblast and has a connection to the expressway network. The South Ukraine nuclear power plant is located in the south of the city . The city belongs to the community of the four satellite cities (cities that have been built near nuclear power plants). The Mayor of Yuzhnoukrajinsk presides over the Community of Satellite Cities.
In the overall Ukrainian city ranking, Juschnoukrajinsk ranks 7th (as of 2004).
geography
Yuzhnoukrajinsk is located on the Southern Bug in the Ukrainian steppe. Important economic centers such as Mykolaiv , Odessa , Kropyvnytskyi and Kryvyi Rih are located nearby . At a distance of 100 km there is an airport and a seaport. The total area of the city is 24.4 km². The city has 14,400 apartments with a total living space of 770,988 m².

As of January 1st, 2000 there were 4,934 pensioners and 12,387 children in the city. Eleven nationalities are represented in the city, including 66% Ukrainians, 31% Russians, 3% others (Belarusians, Moldovans, Bulgarians and others). The average age of the population is 30.6 years (as of January 2000).

Due to its proximity to the nuclear power plant, the city not only has promising development opportunities in the energy sector, but also, due to the geographical conditions, a high potential for tourism. The nearby river with its steep rocky banks offers excellent opportunities for climbing and the slow flow of the river offers optimal conditions for water sports enthusiasts.
The nuclear power plant directly employs 2,600 people. Another 5200 work in the areas that are directly attached to the nuclear power plant. As of January 1, 2003, 273 companies were registered in the city; 160 of these were partnerships, 25 stock companies, 52 cooperatives, 16 state-owned companies, three holdings and ten subsidiaries.
In addition, five banks are represented by their branches in the city, Prominvestbank of Ukraine and BIG-Energia -Bank are just two of them. Two more branches are to be opened in the near future.
The city has a balanced budget and is a net contributor to the state treasury with 8.2 million hryvnia (approx. 1.5 million US dollars, as of February 2004).
Internet, telecommunications, mass media
The city is connected to a public telecommunications network. 9,000 apartments have a connection. Four Internet providers, one provider for radio reception and three providers for cellular networks supply the city.
Yuzhnoukrajinsk has a cable network with 22 channels with 10,000 subscribers.
trade
Trade, especially wholesaling, is very well developed. There are 31 grocery stores and 23 durable goods retailers. There are two wholesale markets in the city.
medicine
There are three clinics in the city: one for children and one for adults, and a hospital with 250 inpatient places. Private health care is under development. To support the urban health system, health insurance has been introduced in Juschnoukrajinsk for all employees of the nuclear power plant and their families.
