Jelanez ( Ukrainian Єланець ; Russian Еланец ) is an urban-type in the south of the Ukraine lying oblast Mykolajiw with about 4900 inhabitants (2016). Jelanez is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
geography
Jelanez is located 90 km north of the Mykolaiv Oblast Center on the Hnylyj Jelanez River ( Гнилий Єланець ), a 103 km long left tributary of the Southern Bug . The nearest train station is in Voznesensk , 45 km west of the village.
In addition to Jelanez, the settlement council also includes the villages Bratoljubiwka ( Братолюбівка ) with about 490 inhabitants and Velidariwka ( Велідарівка ) with about 390 inhabitants.
history
The village with the original name Hnylyj Jelanez was founded between 1802 and 1804 by Cossacks , whose main source of income was cattle breeding and fishing. From 1810 to 1858 the village was called Novomoskowsk ( Новомосковськ ) and then received its current name. The village was occupied by Wehrmacht troops on August 8, 1941 , and liberated by Red Army troops on March 19, 1944 . Jelanez has had urban-type settlement status since 1968.

Jelanez is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name, founded in 1926. The Rajon Jelanez bordered to the north by the Oblast Kirovohrad , has 15,900 inhabitants and an area of 1,017.7 square kilometers. The population density is 16 inhabitants per km².
