Nowa Odessa (Ukrainian Нова Одеса ; Russian Новая Одесса / Nowaja Odessa ) is a city in Mykolaiv Oblast in Ukraine . It is located about 40 kilometers northwest of the Oblast capital Mykolaiv on the Southern Bug .

In addition to the city itself, the town council also includes the village of Kryworischschja (Криворіжжя).

The place emerged from a Cossack settlement, this was called Olexijiwske (Олексіївське) until 1739 and was inhabited by Russian Old Believers. From 1739 to 1832 the name Fedorivka (Федорівка) was the official place name; Zaporog Cossacks settled there mainly after the Russo-Turkish War . After Russian troops were stationed near the place, the military settlement was renamed "Nowa Odessa" in 1832 on the instructions of the emperor and this was then dissolved in 1859 and united with the place.

Since 1923 Nowa Odessa has been the capital of the Nowa Odessa Rajon of the same name , and in 1976 it was granted city status.
