The South Ukraine nuclear power plant ( Ukrainian Південноукраїнська АЕС , Russian Южно-Украинская АЭС ) is located in the Mykolaiv Oblast south of the city of Yuzhnoukrajinsk . The nuclear power plant with three Soviet reactors and a net output of 2850 megawatts is located around 350 kilometers south of the capital Kiev and is currently the second largest of the five nuclear power plants in the country.

history

Construction of the first nuclear reactor began on March 1, 1977. Construction of the second reactor block began on October 1, 1979. On December 31, 1982, the first and on January 6, 1985 the second reactor block was synchronized with the power grid for the first time. In 1985 and 1987, construction of reactor units three and four began. The third unit went into operation on September 20, 1989. Since it belongs to the third VVER series, it has a containment in contrast to the first two blocks . The construction work on reactor block four has been stopped.

power

The three reactor units is VVER third generation. Three different versions of this type of reactor are used in this nuclear power plant. The reactor of the first block of type VVER-1000 in version 302 is the only one of its kind in the world. The reactor in block two is also of the type VVER-1000, but in version 338 it is only used in two reactors in the Kalinin nuclear power plant (Russia) in addition to block two in southern Ukraine . Both are predecessor versions of version 320, which is used in block three and in larger numbers in countries of the former Eastern Bloc . The net output of the three reactors is 950 MW each, the gross output is 1000 MW. The thermal output is 3200 MW.

In 2013 the running time of reactor 1 was extended by ten years, in 2015 that of reactor 2. An extension of the running time of reactor 3 is also planned.

In connection with a planned delivery of fuel elements from Westinghouse for all VVER in Ukraine, six fuel bundles were installed for testing in the South Ukraine nuclear power plant in August 2005. Another 42 fuel elements should follow in 2009. The loading of reactor 3 was completed on July 18, 2018, and that of reactor 2 on June 28, 2020.

Others

The South Ukraine nuclear power plant is the starting point for the 750 kV connection to Romania and Bulgaria, which is no longer operational and has been partially dismantled .

Since the mid-1990s, several million dollars have been invested in upgrading reactor protection and control systems with the help of Western companies and the German Grohnde nuclear power plant , with which the South Ukraine nuclear power plant maintains a partnership for the exchange of experience.
