The Rivne Nuclear Power Plant ( Ukrainian Рівненська АЕС , Russian Ровенская АЭС ) in Ukraine is located near the city of Varasch on the Styr River in Rivne Oblast . Warasch has a nuclear power plant in the town's coat of arms, as the town was built for the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant.

The nuclear power plant consists of two reactors of Soviet design of the type VVER -440/213 and two VVER-1000 / 320th The operator is the state-owned company Energoatom .

history

Construction of the first nuclear reactor began on August 1, 1973. The second reactor block followed on October 1, 1973. On December 31, 1980, the first and on December 30, 1981 the second reactor block went into operation. Unit one has the first built reactor, version 213 of the model VVER-440. In 1980 and 1986, construction of reactor units three and four began. Unit three went into operation on December 21, 1986.

The Ukrainian government approved a decision to extend the operation of the first two reactors on December 10, 2010. Overall, operation was approved for a further 20 years, which means that shutdowns are expected in 2030 Template: future / in 5 yearsand 2031 Template: future / in 5 years.

In 1995 the G7 countries, the European Commission and Ukraine signed a letter of intent to close the Chernobyl nuclear power plant . In support of the Ukrainian decision, Ukraine was granted a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to complete the two 80 percent completed nuclear power plant blocks Chmelnyzkyj 2 and Rivne 4 to replace the shutdown Chernobyl nuclear power plant and to upgrade them to Western safety standards ( "K2 / R4" program). On December 7, 2000, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development approved a loan of US $ 215 million. In 2000, the European Commission decided to grant a Euratom loan for the completion of the Khmelnitsky 2 and Rivne 4 reactors in the amount of 585 million US dollars. The granting of the loan, however, was linked to a decision by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. However, since the EBRD criteria for lending were not met by Ukraine, the loan was ultimately not disbursed. In July 2004, shortly before the two reactors started operating, the EBRD allocated US $ 42 million for modernization and safety improvements. The European Commission provided a further 83 million US dollars within the framework of Euratom to finance a safety retrofit for Energoatom.

The Rivne 4 reactor was synchronized with the grid for the first time on October 10, 2004. The reactor went into commercial operation on April 6, 2006. Unit 4 was already in operation for 1532 hours (663 GWh) in 2004 and 6131 hours (4742 GWh) in 2005.

Disruptions

On December 14, 2005 there was an emergency reactor shutdown in Unit 4. The cause was the shutdown of the pumps in the turbine hall after a short circuit.

On June 10, 2008, around one cubic meter of coolant leaked. No radioactivity was measured outside the facility. The reactor was shut down for safety reasons. According to the operator, the amount did not exceed the permissible norm.
