history
The area of the Turnhout district belonged to the Duchy of Brabant , which was part of the Austrian Netherlands , until the end of the 18th century . In 1790 the United Belgian States emerged from this temporarily . In the First Coalition War , the area was occupied in 1794 and united with the French Republic on the basis of a resolution made by the French National Convention on October 1, 1795 . The administration and the judiciary were adapted to the still new French system and départements , arrondissements and cantons with the associated communes were established. The Arrondissement Turnhout ( French Arrondissement de Turnhout ) belong 1795-1814 the department of Deux-Nèthes and divided into cantons or peace jurisdictions Arendonk ( Arendonck ) Herentals ( Herenthals ) Hoogstraten ( Hoogstraeten ), mole ( Moll ), Turnhout and Westerlo ( Westerloo ).
