history

The area of the district of Ypres belonged to the county of Flanders , which was part of the Austrian Netherlands , until the end of the 18th century . In 1790 the United Belgian States emerged from this temporarily . In the First Coalition War , the area was occupied in 1794 and united with the French Republic on the basis of a resolution made by the French National Convention on October 1, 1795 . The administration and the judiciary were adapted to the still new French system and départements , arrondissements and cantons with the associated communes were established. The Arrondissement Ypres ( French Arrondissement d'Ypres ) belonged 1795 to 1814 for Département de la Lys and divided into cantons or peace jurisdictions Elverdinge ( Elverdinghe ) Hooglede ( Hooglede ), Mesen ( Messines ), Passendale ( Passchendaele ), Poperinge ( Poperinghe ), Wervik ( Wervicq ) and Ypres ( Ypres ) (2 cantons).
