Poperinge is a Belgian city in the Flanders region . It is located in the province of West Flanders in the Belgian arrondissement of Ypres . The city has 19,702 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 119.33 km².
geography
Poperinge is located in the far west of Belgium, only a few kilometers from the French border. Ypres is 11 kilometers east, the Belgian coast on the English Channel at Nieuwpoort 33 km north, Kortrijk 37 km east and Brussels 115 km east (all information as the crow flies to the respective city center).

partnership
In 1964 the partnership with the Czech city of Žatec was established. There has been a town partnership with the German town of Wolnzach for around 30 years . The Polish district town of Krasnystaw became the twin town of Poperinges in 1995. Since May 30, 2009 Poperinge has had a partnership with the German municipality of Frielendorf in the Schwalm-Eder district .

The next motorway exits are Ypres-Noord in the east on the Belgian motorway A19 , Veurne in the north on the A18 / E 40 and Steenvoorde in the west near the municipality of the same name, which already belongs to France, on the French. A25 / E 42 motorway . Today the city is the terminus of the single-track branch line (Kortrijk) - Comines-Warneton -Ypres-Poperinge, electrified since the 1980s , which continued to Hazebrouck in France until 1970 (discontinuation) / 1972 (dismantling) .
