Koksijde is a municipality in the province of West Flanders on the Flemish coast. The community has 21,910 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). The main source of income is tourism. In the Oostduinkerke district, crabs are still fished with nets and horses.

history

In 1777 the place appears as Cauxyde in the Ferraris maps . In 1977 the municipalities of Oostduinkerke , Wulpen and Koksijde including Sankt Idesbald (Flemish Sint-Idesbald ) were merged. In 2004 the Studio Koksijde cinema was built; it is the only cinema on the Belgian west coast and in the Westhoek .

The vacationers of the summer of 1914 saw themselves “stranded at the most beautiful end of the world,” wrote the writer Jakob Hein in Lieutenant Stern's novel Die Orient-Mission .
