Nieuwpoort

history

Lighthouse at Nieuwpoort (1822)

In the 11th century Robrecht the Friesian founded the cities of Ypres and Lille as well as the new port city of Nieuwpoort. In 1163 Nieuwpoort received city rights from Philip of Alsace .

From its inception until 1160, Nieuport was called Sandhoven because it was built on a very large dune. Sandhoven was a simple market town until 1160, then the place was surrounded by walls, became a town and from then on was called Nieuport (New Harbor) as a result of the improvement of the Yzer Canal.

The large lighthouse at Nieuwpoort was built in 1284 by order of Guido I , restored in 1858 and equipped with an oil lamp in 1862.

In 1383 the city was almost completely destroyed by a terrible siege. The lighthouse was not fully functional again until 1391. In a few years, however, she rose again with the help of Philip the Bold and his wife Margaretha von Maele. All roads were laid out in a straight line (1426) and trade rose again.

In 1436 the English , coming from Calais , devastated all of West Flanders, including Nieuwpoort.

Between 1595 and 1605, numerous witch trials took place in the county of Flanders, which included the city of Nieuwpoort . For Nieuwpoort, the trial of the "witch" Jeanne Panne has been handed down. In 2012 the city rehabilitated 15 women and two men executed for witchcraft .

In the Dutch War of Independence on July 2, 1600 at the Battle of Nieuwpoort, the Dutch under Moritz von Nassau were victorious over the Spaniards under Archduke Albrecht .

Nieuwpoort was badly damaged during the First World War . Flanders was considered the main battle area. The historic lighthouse from the 13th century was destroyed on October 18, 1914 by the Belgian army in order not to be an easy target for the German artillery. In the First Battle of Flanders in autumn 1914, the Belgian troops submerged the battlefield: They opened the Nieuwpoort sea locks at high tide and closed them at low tide. The German attackers then had to retreat behind the Yser. During the gas war in 1917, the chemical warfare agent blue cross was fired for the first time near Nieuwpoort .

Soon after 1918 the city was rebuilt with a new floor plan, but also while maintaining historical structures. The fortifications built between Nieuwpoort and Ostend were expanded into an Atlantic Wall during World War II .

Economy and Transport

Sun and sea on the large, wide sandy beach of Nieuwpoort form the basis of tourism, which is important for the city . Campsites, youth hostels, hotels and holiday villages offer accommodation options for guests who come mainly from Belgium , the Netherlands, France , Germany and England . A marina with over 2000 berths is available for water sports enthusiasts.

Another economic factor is fishing . The fishing port and fish auction have made Nieuwpoort famous for the quality of its fish. The “Nieuwpoorter Fischbacker”, an association with the aim of selling fresh fish at home and abroad in an original way (traditional costumes), particularly contribute to this. In Belgium, Nieuwpoort has long been known as “Hoofdstad van de verse Vis” (the capital of fresh fish).

Nieuwpoort can be reached quickly by car from Brussels and Calais via the A18- E40 , which runs directly past Nieuwpoort city.

A special feature is the coastal tram that connects Nieuwpoort-Stadt, Nieuwpoort-Bad, Koksijde and De Panne over a distance of 68 km.

tradition

Nieuwpoort is also a national attraction because of its festivals, whereby the witch's procession , which takes place every three years, is particularly worth mentioning. During the witch festival, amateur actors portray the whole story of the "witch" Jeanne Panne, with persecution, conviction and cremation.

The giants Jacqueline , Puuptje and Crabbe at a parade in the
twin town of Rodgau

Every year there is a huge parade in Nieuwpoort ; in July 2009, 136 giant figures took part. The Nieuwpoorter giants have been carried through the city to festivals, fairs and fairs for over 500 years . The two smaller giants, Goliath and Gretchen, already reach a height of 4.20 meters. The largest, called Jan Turpin, has a stately height of 10.60 meters. It is the largest of its kind in Europe , weighs 750 kilograms and has to be carried by 24 strong men who hide under the skirt.

The giants are reminiscent of historical figures:

  • Jan Turpin is named after the mayor at the time who, during the siege of Nieuwpoort by the French in 1489, called on women to support their tired husbands in battle. This giant figure was first produced (“born”) in 1924, destroyed in the war and made anew in 1962.
  • The couple Goliath and Gretchen embodies the heroism that the population demonstrated during the siege in 1489.
  • Puuptje was "born" in 2000 in honor of Julien de Groote, one of the men who in 1962 made Jan Turpin 'rebirth' possible. The nickname comes from the typical tobacco pipe ( puupe in the Nieuwpoort dialect ).
  • Jacqueline recalls the story of the witch hunt in the 17th century. Jacqueline Puyt lived in Nieuwpoort and was burned as a witch in 1627, like her mother in 1603.
  • The youngest and currently smallest giant, Crabbe, dates back to 2005. He bears the facial features of the current mayor, Roland Crabbe.

There are more than 17,000 giants in Flanders.
