Roel D'Haese (born October 26, 1921 in Geraardsbergen (French: Grammont ), Belgium ; † May 18, 1996 in Bruges , Belgium) was a Belgian sculptor and graphic artist . He was one of the most important representatives of modern art after the Second World War , who is known for his surrealist sculptures .

Life

Almost all of Roel D'Haese's family devoted themselves to sculpture. His younger brother Reinhoud D'Haese (* 1928) and his sister Begga D'Haese (* 1939), who was married to the physician Herman Le Compte , are also sculptors. Roel D'Haese studied at the Aalst Academy from 1935 to 1938 and then worked in Oscar Jespers' studio in Brussels . In 1954 he was awarded the Prix ​​Jeune Sculpture Belge .

In addition to his sculpture, Roel D'Haese created an extensive graphic work between 1957 and 1980, mainly with sarcastic animal and human figures. In 1958 he was a participant in the 29th  Venice Biennale and in the following year in the documenta II in Kassel in the plastic department .

In 1969 he created the famous monumental painting " L'Aviateur " for the Hermann-Debroux station on the Brussels Metro . In 1977 Roel D'Haese was once again a participant in a documenta in Kassel , Documenta VI in the drawing department . In 1980 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Rijksuniversiteit of Ghent .

He lived and worked in Nieuwpoort since 1965 and died in 1996 after a long illness.
