history
In 1245 Tielt received city rights from Margaret of Constantinople . After the construction of a cloth hall (1275), the city experienced its first heyday. In 1393 Philip II introduced an annual market in Tielt, which gave the drapery guild in particular a great boost. In 1645 large parts of the city burned down. Also in the First and even more so in the Second World War, many buildings were destroyed and had to be rebuilt. During the First World War, the city was the headquarters of the 4th Army of the German Armed Forces from October 20, 1914 to October 2, 1918 .
