Aloys Maria Joseph Burggraf van de Vijvere (Vyvere) (born June 8, 1871 in Tielt , † October 22, 1961 in Paris ) was a Belgian Catholic politician and Prime Minister.

Studies and professional activities

He completed his studies in law and philosophy with a doctorate in law and doctorate in philosophy. During his student days he was already involved in the Flemish movement and in social issues. After completing his law studies, he established himself as a lawyer in Ghent .

Political career

MP and Minister

Van de Vijvere began his political career by being elected to the Chamber of Deputies. There he represented the interests of the Katholieke Partij in the Arrondissement Roeselare - Tielt until 1932 .

Prime Minister Charles de Broqueville appointed him to his cabinet on June 17, 1911 . Van de Vijvere was first Minister for Agriculture and Public Works (1911 to 1912), Minister for Railways (1912 to 1914) and finally Finance Minister during the First World War from 1914 to 1918 there until May 31, 1918. In 1918 he was awarded the royal honorary title of Minister of State .

In the post-war cabinets of Henri Carton de Wiart and Georges Theunis , he was Minister of Economics from 1920 to 1924 and briefly Minister of Justice in 1921.

Prime Minister 1925

After the resignation of Theuni's government on May 13, he became prime minister and finance minister of a transitional government. His government, which consisted mainly of ministers from the Katholieke Partij and a few technocrats , was unable to solve the economic problems of the time and was overthrown after just over a month on June 17, 1925.
