Henri Marthe Sylvie Rolin (born May 3, 1891 in Ghent , † April 20, 1973 in Paris ) was a Belgian lawyer and politician . Among other things, he was President of the Belgian Senate from 1947 to 1949 , Professor of International Law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1930 to 1961, and President of the European Court of Human Rights from 1968 to 1971 .

Life

Henri Rolin was born in Ghent in 1891 and studied law at the University of Ghent , where he received his doctorate in 1919 . After the end of the First World War , he was involved in drafting the Versailles Peace Treaty . From 1930 until his retirement on the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1961, he worked as a professor of international law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles , including from 1947 to 1950 as dean of its law faculty. Together with Charles De Visscher and some other legal experts and diplomats, he founded the Belgian Institute royal des relations internationales (Royal Institute for International Relations, IRRI) in 1947 . In addition, from 1924 he was a member of the Institut de Droit international (Institute for International Law), of which he chaired its 51st meeting in Brussels in 1963. From 1959 to 1971 he worked as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights , of which he was President from September 27, 1968 to May 5, 1971. In this office he was followed by the British lawyer Humphrey Waldock .

From 1931 Henri Rolin was a member of the Belgian Workers' Party ( Belgische Werkliedenpartij ) and later also of its successor organization, the Socialist Party of Belgium ( Parti socialiste belge ). From March 13 to March 31, 1946 he served as Minister of Justice of Belgium and from November 11, 1947 to November 6, 1949 as President of the Belgian Senate , of which he was a member from 1932 to 1968. In 1948 he was appointed Minister of State. In the Belgian municipality of Waterloo , the Boulevard Henri Rolin bears his name. The Center de droit international (Center for International Law) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles has awarded the Prix ​​Henri Rolin for outstanding research in the field of international law and international relations since 1976 . In addition, there is an honorary chair for visiting professors known as Chaire Henri Rolin at the university .

Herin Rolin died in Paris in 1973 . His father Albéric Rolin , his uncle Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns and his son Edouard Rolin-Jaequemyns were also renowned lawyers in the field of international law and in some cases held high positions in Belgian politics.
