Alexandre Joseph Célestin Gendebien (born May 4, 1789 in Mons , † December 6, 1869 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician.

Gendebien worked as a lawyer and made a name for himself in 1829 as the defender of the editor Louis de Potter , on whose opposition newspaper Courrier des Pays-Bas he himself was a collaborator when this was tried by the government. He established successful connections with the leaders of the French movement party and tried every possible way to bring about the separation of Belgium from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands .

During the Revolution of 1830 he was a member of the Provisional Government and a declared Republican alongside Louis De Potter. Gendebien became a member of the National Congress and took over the Ministry of Justice under the reign of Surlet de Chokiers . After Prince Leopold von Sachsen-Coburg was elected King of Belgium, he took a decidedly oppositional stance against the system of government that has been followed since then. He later became President of the Supreme Court.

Gendebien was the most important representative of the so-called Rattachisme , who aimed to join Belgium (or at least Wallonia ) to France. However, his party melted more and more together. When he himself suffered a complete defeat in an indictment against Minister Lebeau on August 23, 1833 , but especially since he was unable to prevent the ratification of a peace treaty with the Netherlands and the cession of Luxembourg in the Chamber of Representatives in 1839 , he withdrew more and more withdrew more from active politics, resigned his office as a councilor and board member of the advocacy class and limited his activity to practicing his profession as a lawyer.
