Jean Nicolay (1961)

Jean Nicolay ( December 27, 1937 - August 18, 2014 ) was a Belgian football player . In 1963, the goalkeeper was the first player in this position to receive the Golden Shoe as Belgium's Footballer of the Year. He later worked internationally as a goalkeeping coach .

Athletic career

Nicolay was promoted to the Standard Liège competition team in 1955 . By 1969 he played over 500 competitive games for the club across all competitions. He won the Belgian championship title in 1958, 1961, 1963 and 1969, and in 1966 and 1967 he also won the Belgian national cup. His good performances led him to debut in the Belgian national shirt in May 1959 , and by 1967 he played 39 international matches . Before that, he had already been in eight U-19 international matches from 1955 to 1957, and in 1958 in one U-21 international match.

In 1969 Nicolay moved to the first division relegated Royal Daring Club , with which he reached the cup final in 1970. After goals from Swedes Tom Turesson and Pierre Carteus were only 2-0 against Club Brugge by half-time , the game ended with a 6-1 defeat with the highest final result in the history of the cup competition. He later ran for the RFC Tilleur .

After completing his active career, Nicolay hired himself as a goalkeeping coach. Among other things, he worked for his hometown club Standard Liège, and he was also involved with KV Mechelen and FC Metz . With the Swiss "Nati" and the Belgian national team, selection teams were also among his employers. Among other things, he looked after Michel Preud'homme .
