Extra credits

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Extra credit is emitted since 2011 animated edutainment - web series from the United States about video game development and Ludologie . According to its creators Daniel Floyd and game designer James Portnow ( Call of Duty , FarmVille ), the intention behind the series is to make video game development topics accessible to interested parties and future developers. The industry magazine Gamasutra reported on it several times and called it one of the most cited series by video game developers.

Extra Credits originated from presentations by the series lecturer Daniel Floyd, which were created as part of his studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design . In terms of style, he said he was based on the web series Zero Punctuation by Ben Croshaw . In the second episode he refers to the writings of James Portnow, since the third they have been working together. In July 2010, weekly episodes were announced under the name Extra Credits on the online media magazine The Escapist . In 2011, Extra Credits had a financial conflict with The Escapist . Extra Credits was published on the Penny Arcade website until Penny Arcade drastically reduced its offer in 2014.

subjects

In their channel information, extra credits name examples of topics such as the Uncanny Valley , which, like animated films, poses a problem for the often photographic and hyper-realistic graphics of modern video games, and the Skinner box and its use in video games and its significance for pathological gaming and computer game addiction . Portnow is known for his theories about socially positive video game development.

In May 2012, Extra Credits published an episode about bullying in multiplayer games , at the end of which viewers were asked to appeal to Microsoft's Xbox Live and similar online services and to demand (technical) solutions. Portnow was then invited by Microsoft and discussed the issue with executives. In the same year, he also spoke on a panel discussion at PAX Prime on the subject. Later episodes touched on the subject again.

Since 2013, the series has been reviewing the video game industry in countries where it does not have international significance such as the United States, Japan , South Korea , Great Britain and Germany , and examines its opportunities and problems. The observations are based on Portnow's own experience, which he gains by advising video game developers based there. Video game developers describe these observations as very accurate, correct, and relevant.

In September 2013 Extra Credits published a first episode of their future spin-off Extra History . The developers behind Total War: Rome II , Creative Assembly used part of their marketing budget to provide extra credits for a short series on Roman history. In April 2014, Extra Credits announced further episodes and asked their viewers for financial support for the continuation of this series. The project is one of the most successful projects of the crowdfunding platform Patreon . In 2015 Extra History won Khan Academy's talent search .

James Portnow advocates a more intensive use of the educational possibilities of video games ( see digital learning game ), and the necessary collaboration between educators and game developers. The gamification of education was the subject of several episodes of the series. In March 2015, Extra Credits founded the Steam community group Extra Credits EDU , which examines and recommends video games for possible useful use in the classroom. Extra credits also criticize the abuse of gamification, for example for propaganda purposes.
