action

Frank, sentenced to life imprisonment, decides to break out of prison after 14 years. The reason for this decision is his 21-year-old daughter, whom he no longer wants to leave alone after an overdose of drugs. In order to implement his plan, he recruits his "prison brother" Brodie, the brutal Lenny and Viv Batista. Shortly before the outbreak is imminent, Frank receives a visit from his wife, who breaks down wordlessly in tears; it seems clear that his daughter has already died of an overdose after all. The group can find their way into the prison's ventilation and sewage system through a thin wall in the confessional of the prison chapel. They are helped by an impression of the chapel key made by Frank and a diamond from a knocked out tooth. Only two of the group finally make it to a subway tunnel. Since Frank is seriously injured by the prison king Rizza in revenge for his slain brother Tony at the beginning of the attempt to escape, he finally collapses on the way to freedom and bleeds to death. In the final scene of the film, Frank meets his daughter unharmed, but as a teenage schoolgirl. In a flashback, it becomes clear that he did not survive the injury, but only fantasized about his participation in the escape in view of his imminent death.

Special stylistic means

The prison break story is divided into two storylines. One of them begins to break out shortly before Frank's decision and describes the plan. The second begins at the beginning of the film with the active breakout. The storylines are told alternately.

Worth mentioning

The film was shot in 26 days. The extras in the prison were mostly amateur actors and former prisoners who supported the film crew with information from everyday prison life. The film premiered in January 2007 in Great Britain.

The British band Coldplay dedicated their song of the same name, The Escapist , to the film . It can be found as a hidden track on the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends .

reception

“The prison thriller, told in many flashbacks, reveals the director's style will, but is not immune to numerous clichés. The committed play of the good actors largely makes up for this. "
