Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (Spanish or English for: " Long live life or death and all his friends ") is the fourth studio album by the English pop rock band Coldplay . The album was released on June 13, 2008 in German-speaking countries. On November 25, 2008, the album wasre-releasedas Viva La Vida Prospect's March Edition together with the 2008 Prospekt's March EP .

background

As early as 2007 there was speculation about a successor to the 2005 album X&Y . Due to the band's dissatisfaction with the material that had been completed so far, everything was discarded and a new release date for spring 2008 was set. This was ultimately postponed again. Under the heading Prospectus , two new songs - Famous Old Painters and Glass of Water - were announced on the Coldplay website . This led to the speculation that Prospect was the title of the new album.

Coldplay worked on this album with Brian Eno , who already influenced the music style of their album X&Y . The first single Violet Hill was released in Germany on May 9th, 2008. As part of a release strategy, the band decided to offer the song from April 29th for one week for free download on their website. Within a few days it was downloaded millions of times, which led to a brief server crash at coldplay.com. The song was also included free of charge in the May issue of the British music magazine New Musical Express in the form of a vinyl with the additional special track A Spell a Rebel Yell .

The album is produced as a kind of endless loop, as Death and All His Friends or The Escapist and Life can be seamlessly joined together in Technicolor . The songs were written by Coldplay; only with Life in Technicolor and The Escapist worked Jon Hopkins with. In addition, with Chinese Sleep Chant in the title Yes and The Escapist in Death and All His Friends two hidden tracks are included on the album. The title Lost! entered the UK charts without appearing as a single.

Cover

The picture Freedom leads the people by Eugène Delacroix from 1830 was used as the album cover . The painting illustrates the prevailing striving for freedom of the population at that time and depicts the street battles of the July Revolution , in which citizens prevailed against the absolutist rule of Charles X despite high losses in the struggle for freedom and a say . The words Viva la Vida were “painted” on the album about Freedom Leads the People .
