Something Just Like This ( German : "Just something") is a song of the American DJ - duo The Chainsmokers in cooperation with the British pop-rock - band Coldplay . The Future Bass track is the second pre-release single from their debut album Memories… Do Not Open and was released on February 22, 2017 via Disruptor and Columbia Records .

background

The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers as well as all band members of Coldplay were involved in the creation of the song. While Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall acted on the keyboards, Guy Berryman was responsible for the bass guitar, Jonny Buckland for the lead guitar, Will Champion for drums and backing vocals and Chris Martin for the lead vocals and piano. As with the last singles by the DJ duo, DJ Swivel also made an appearance during the production.

As early as September 2016, the Chainsmokers gave an insight into the production of a song in the form of two short clips, in which Coldplay singer Chris Martin can be seen alongside them . The duo said about the collaboration in advance:

“We don't want to bewitch anything or give too much away. What we can tell you is that this guy [Chris Martin] is just talented. It was one of the coolest moments we had in our career in the studio. "

- The Chainsmokers

On February 22, 2017, Spotify prematurely released a banner ad at the top of the homepage. In addition to the graphic, this also contained the “Play Now” button. However, the button did not lead back to the song. On the same day, Coldplay played the song together with The Chainsmokers on stage at the BRIT Awards 2017 in the O₂-Arena in London. Although the previous releases of both artists were typically on a Friday, the track appeared in connection with the performance on Wednesday immediately after their performance.

Musical and content

Coldplay

The song is in 4/4 time , the tempo is 103 bpm . The intro (guitar, bass guitar, spherical synthesizer) has just arrived in measure 4 when Chris Martin's first vocal verse begins. During this time, there is no clock-setting kick. After the first half of the first verse, several instruments can be heard in the background, pushing themselves into the foreground. No beat can be heard during the chorus either. After completion of this, the drop sounds, which is based on a similar sound design as Roses . The second stanza, unlike the first, contains a kick. After the second refrain and drop, a bridge sets in, in which Martin's voice is clearly more powerful and underlined. The drop is also alluded to more strongly. This is also characterized by lighter synths.

In the text, the lyric self describes how it would fare poorly against a number of superheroes and characters from mythology. But it realizes that the female person it tries to impress will not be inspired by it anyway. Instead, he realizes that it is all about being able to identify with the partner and gain new experience.

"But she said, where'd you wanna go?
How much you wanna risk?
I'm not looking for somebody
With some superhuman gifts
Some superhero
Some fairytale bliss
Just something I can turn to
Somebody I can kiss "

“She said where do you want to go?
How much do you want to risk
I'm not looking for someone
with superhuman powers,
no superhero,
no prince charming,
just someone who will stick with me,
someone who I can kiss "

- Refrain, translation

reception

criticism

The reviews for Something Just Like This have varied greatly. First and foremost, the song was well received in the overall work, but parallels were quickly drawn to the previous singles of the Chainsmokers, including Roses in particular .

Regarding the name popularity, Michelvmusic from "A Bit of Pop Music" was not very enthusiastic about the result of the collaboration:

“Does this mean that 'Something Just Like This' is a great single? Not necessarily. The Chainsmokers do what they do best, catchy EDM with pop elements and predictable breakdowns at the end of the chorus. The only big difference is that this time the vocals are from Chris Martin. And these vocal parts aren't that strong! The breakdown is something we've heard a hundred times, including in the Chainsmokers' singles themselves. It feels a bit lazy to just copy and paste when you have Coldplay in the studio. It's hard to tell what's from Chris Martin and his men in this song. You don't necessarily need the Chainsmokers to land a hit either, and this song sounds even more mainstream than their last album. In short, I'm not sure if this has enough potential to be at the top of the international charts for really long. "

Tim Tabens from " Dance Charts " also compared the song with Roses , but particularly praised Chris Martin's singing.

“The title gets under your skin and can shine with its modern and interesting elements. The voice of Chris Martin fits here perfectly and gives the title the final touch. "
