Memories ... Do Not Open ( dt. Memories ... not open ) is the debut studio album of American DJ - and producer - duo The Chainsmokers . It was released on April 7, 2017 via Disruptor Records, Columbia Records . Collaborations can be found with Coldplay and Louane , among others . Before the release, the songs Paris and Something Just Like This were released as a single. One week after the release, the duo will start the North American tour of the same name.

background

As with the previous singles, her studio partner DJ Swivel took part in the long player. Taggart said:

“I don't let anyone work on any of our music; Jordan [Jung, AKA 'DJ Swivel'] is helping us with the vocals, and I let him mix one of our songs once, but I'm just too involved and I want it exactly how I want it. He's a particularly talented guy, but I'm just too sensitive to our productions! But he does a great job with our vocals. He does things, I have no idea how he does it, and the Daya vocals [on Don't Let Me Down ] are probably the best produced voice we have. "

- Andrew Taggart : headlining magazines
The Chainsmokers 2016

While Andrew Taggart was involved in both the production and songwriting of all the songs on the album, Alexander Pall only appeared as a songwriter for a selection of songs, but as a producer for all of them. Apart from the Chainsmokers themselves, a number of other composers and songwriters worked on the songs. There are also plenty of guest musicians to be found as singers.

On January 22, 2017, Coldplay said in a post on their Twitter profile after their joint studio session for the song Something Just Like This that they were very excited about the album. With this contribution they announced to the Chainsmokers themselves that they were planning an album, which is why they shortly afterwards said “Hey guys. We think the cat is out of the bag ”replied the Coldplay post.

During an on-screen interview on the Grammy Awards red carpet , the duo announced the title Memories… Do Not Open , and shortly thereafter the release date. At the same time they also said that they would go on tour under the same name. In the interview you can see that after the release date was revealed, Taggart hesitantly asked Pall if he should have said it at all: “We are ready, we have the album complete, it will be great, it will be out on April 7th… Should have Should I say that? ”Before Pall replied,“ No, but it's okay ”.

Parallel to the release of the second single Something Just Like This , the album was released for pre-sale on February 24, 2017.

On March 14, 2017, the duo announced the album's official tracklist. A number of songs have already been unofficially announced by the database copyright protection company ASCAP . In the course of this, confusion quickly arose when on the one hand the long-awaited collaboration Coldest Summer with Bebe Rexha is not part of the album and the track Wake Up Alone is not sung by Dua Lipa despite her collaboration .

The last pre-release single was the song The One . This was released on March 27, 2017 in the form of a promo single . The song is sung by Taggart, with the songwriting co-workers Scott Harris and Emily Warren.

On August 4, 2017, Honest was released as a single in the form of a selection of remixes. Furthermore, the Dutch DJ and producer Nicky Romero premiered an official remix of her song Young in the summer of 2017 . Another remix single, Young, followed on September 29, 2017 .

Title & artwork

On February 23, 2017, they posted a statement about the album on Instagram, in which they explain the background of the title and the album cover. The title refers to the songs in the album or its background. They wrote that as song writing went faster and music became more personal, they realized that they always had more to say. In addition to themselves, the songs are about various things that they want to deal with in the past and future. In that sense they would have called it Memories ... Do Not Open , because the songs would be very personal, collections of private memories and thoughts that they want to share with their fans.

On the artwork you can see a box on which the title of the album can be read. This is in a room that is only illuminated by a chain of lights. A window gives a view of rainy, gloomy weather. The box is supposed to represent a collection of items that mother would pack up once you moved out. They said that listening to the music on the album felt like coming home and opening this box and that every song should symbolize a memory from the box.

Single releases

Emily Warren, singer from Paris and accompanist on her tour

Paris

The first single from the album was released on January 13, 2017. This is called Paris . This premiered almost a month before and was traded as a collaboration with the French singer Louane . Behind the uncredited vocals, however, hides singer Emily Warren , who was asked about the song in an interview with Billboard's Taylor Weatherby . She said, “The Chainsmokers happened to be in New York and I was working on some projects nearby and they said, 'Can you come over please? We are in the process of finishing a song, but this one is still missing something, but we don't know what it is. Can you come over and sing in the backing vocals or something? ' So I stopped by and supported some of Drew's parts and sang the different parts that you can hear in the song. ”The song was released on January 13, 2017 and reached the top 10 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and others in the UK and USA.

Something Just Like This

On February 22, 2017, the song Something Just Like This was released as a second single. This was developed in cooperation with Coldplay and premiered at the BRIT Awards 2017 and in connection with it was published out of sequence on a Wednesday instead of a Friday. With the song they reached the top places in Germany, the United Kingdom and the USA.

The One

The One was released as the third single on March 27, 2017 . For the first time, the final version was presented in a preview on Facebook. At the same time, the song was made available on iTunes for download from the album, with the track acting as a promo single. The One forms the title track of the album, which makes it particularly noticeable due to its structure. This is expressed by a change from a quiet ballad to an EDM-heavy future bass.

Honest

Honest was first released as a single on July 11, 2017, according to sources. Worldwide, however, a selection of remixes was only released as a digital EP on August 4, 2017. Among other things, Tritonal, Lifelike and Rootkid contributed new interpretations of the song. However, this did not lead to success.

Young

On September 29, 2017, the Chainsmokers released another remix single with Young . This included remixes by K? D, KO: YU and Midnight Kids. In Canada they reached a position in the singles charts with Young .

criticism

The album received mostly negative reviews. Despite the high commercial potential due to the style of music, the monotonous appearance of the album as well as a lack of variety and surprise factor were noted in particular. The critic Vitus Benson of the online magazine Dance-Charts wrote:

“The Chainsmokers class themselves as pop stars with their debut album“ Memories… Do Not Open ”. In a subtle way, the long player turned its back on electronic music and opened up to a wider radio audience. In terms of quality, that doesn't mean any compromises, every single song is good to listen to, but the really big new tracks are somehow not included. "

- Vitus Benson : dance charts

Entertainment Weekly's Barry Walters said the album sounded more like playing the radio instead of a single album. Jon Caramarnica of the New York Times noted that the lyrics were too consistent and only sung by youth relationships. Damien Morris of " The Guardian " called the album "Trump-Pop" and called it "flat and betraying its influences, peppered with third-degree vocabulary and ambition, the mixture of which aims at nothing more than emptying the next wallet."

The forum reddit started an action in which members were asked to describe the album in four words. Here the disappointment of the fans became clear. In particular, online magazines favored the descriptions “Memories… Do Not Listen” or “What's it called again?”.

Commercial win

The pre-singles already achieved high chart positions and sales figures. After it was released for pre-sale on February 22, 2017, it already made it into the album charts of some download portals. The released singles also achieved high placements in the single charts. Paris could be sold over two million times. Something Just Like This around half a million times within a month.
