Dance-Charts is a German-language online magazine that was founded in 2008 by music producers and journalists Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing and Axel Jäger . It deals with news from the music world. The site is particularly specialized in the field of dance and house music. Sampling of new songs is also offered as part of a DJ promotion portal. In addition, numerous current chart lists are available. The website is organized as a civil law company (GbR) due to the common interest .

history

The site was founded on April 16, 2008 as a music chart portal with attached DJ sampling. Users can register for free and submit their personal charts every week. The dance charts were raised to 200 positions by 2012 and published the following Monday. In May 2014, additional charts were introduced for various sub-genres of house music, including the electro and deep house as well as pop and hands-up top lists . Since October 2014 the “Dance Charts” and the respective sub-charts have been published on Friday.

In June 2012 the site was relaunched. In the course of this, the portal was expanded as an online magazine in which articles from the music business appear daily. In addition to articles from the world of music, interviews were carried out on behalf of the website, events, songs and concerts were reviewed and many other new categories were introduced. Furthermore, the charts were shortened to 100 positions with the relaunch and the top 10 single charts in other countries can be accessed. You can now open a user account on the site. With the registration, the options are given to "sample" new songs, to type charts and to apply for the DJ pool .

A weekly web TV show called Dance-Charts TV was realized between October 2014 and 2016. Unlike various other web shows, the format is only shared on its own website and not on video platforms such as YouTube . In the aftermath, the presenter Sinan Kurtulus provided information on relevant news from the music industry and new releases. There is also the option of following the online magazine on numerous social media platforms. Readers on Facebook are informed about new articles on a daily basis, toplists are shared and some are broadcast live from festivals. Among other things, the “Tracks of the day” category is offered on Twitter , and since July 2016 there has also been a Spotify playlist listing the current dance charts.

The owner Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing is part of the podcast "Die Klangküche", supported by Dance Charts, which is published on the Futorial YouTube channel . In addition to Wernke-Schmiesing, the producer Sinan Kurtulus and Sebastian Schilde are also part of the assembly there.

Categories

The subject areas of the individual articles can be divided into different categories with different publication frequencies. Here is a list of some of the topics:

  • Boulevard topics (news from the music industry)
  • Interviews
  • Columns (elaboration of current or general topics from the music world)
  • Artist biographies
  • New releases (reviews and descriptions of individual songs or albums)
  • Top 10 articles (rankings on various topics)
  • Timeless reports (articles that are not tied to current events)

DJ pool

The DJ pool has existed since the site was founded in 2008. Since then, record companies and other artists have been given the opportunity to advertise their music. Through the DJ promotion via the website, labels reach DJs who may play the tracks in their sets, both on live performances and in podcast episodes on various music platforms, as well as potential listeners and buyers of dance music. The songs are made freely available to the DJs for support purposes, the non-DJs are offered a 30-second preview as well as several links to various online music services. As part of a DJ promotion, customers receive a statistical analysis, differentiated between DJs and non-DJs.

editorial staff

In addition to the two founders of the site Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing and Axel Jäger, the editorial team has grown over the years. The members who are already part of the team, as well as the writers who are always sought after, do not require any professional experience in the field of journalism. Since the target group is also primarily aimed at schoolchildren and students, they are also advertised for joining the team. The freelance authors can choose the area they want to report on, be it a special category, a special artist or a single topic.
