Daya (born October 24, 1998 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; actually Grace Martine Tandon ) is an American singer .

Life

Grace Tandon was born in Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and raised in Mt. Lebanon. She got piano lessons at a young age , other instruments such as guitar and saxophone followed. When she was ten, she also took singing lessons. She later performed at local events as well. A friend of the singing teacher brought her to the Z-Entertainment label , where she signed a record deal when she was 16. Her grandfather comes from India and while looking for a stage name she came across the translation of her first name Grace, which means "grace" as translated Daya in Hindi . Their first release under this name was Hide Away and began as a local radio hit in the spring of 2015 and was very successful on the Internet, among other things thanks to the support of bloggers like Perez Hilton . She began US-wide promotion and in the fall the EP Daya was released with Hide Away and five other songs. The song alone sold over a million copies ( platinum status ) and reached number 23 on the US singles charts . The EP came in at number 61 and stayed in the album charts for 48 weeks .

The American DJ duo The Chainsmokers became aware of Daya at the end of 2015 . Together they recorded the trap title Don't Let Me Down , which reached the top 10 of the German single charts .

In 2018, the singer came out as bisexual.
