The Wells Fargo Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the US city of Des Moines , Iowa .
history
Opened in 2005, the multi-purpose arena offers a maximum of 16,980 seats and is named after the banking and financial services company Wells Fargo . Equipped the hall with 36 suites , 20 VIP - boxes , 600 club seats and a restaurant called The Principal River's Edge with 180 seats. Wells Fargo Arena is part of the Iowa Event Center , which also includes Hy-Vee Hall , the 11,227-seat Veterans Memorial Auditorium , which was inaugurated in 1955, and the Polk County Convention Complex . The building is mainly used for sporting events and concerts. The operating company Spectra (formerly Global Spectrum ) also operates the Wells Fargo Center (formerly: Wachovia Center) in Philadelphia .
The hall was officially opened on July 12, 2005. The first event at the Wells Fargo Arena was on July 14, 2005 with the Tony Hawk 's boom-boom Huck Jam . Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers gave their first concert on July 18, 2005 with the Black Crowes .
The arena was home to the Iowa Stars and their successor Iowa Chops from the American Hockey League (AHL) from 2005 to 2009 . In 2007, the Iowa Energy ( NBA D-League ) basketball team was added. In 2008, the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League (AFL) moved from the Veterans Memorial Auditorium to the larger hall. The wrestling league WWE was a guest with several of its events such as SmackDown !, RAW and ECW .
