The Pechanga Arena San Diego is a multi-purpose arena on the Point Loma peninsula of the US city ​​of San Diego in the state of California . The arena can accommodate a maximum of 16,100 visitors. In the 1960s and 70s, the two basketball teams of the San Diego Rockets and the San Diego Clippers ( NBA ) were based in the hall. The 1971 NBA All-Star Game was played at the San Diego Sports Arena. The driving force behind the construction and financier of the 6.4 million US dollar arena was Robert "Bob" Breitbard (1919-2010). Formerly head coach at San Diego State University , he was a member of the Greater San Diego Sports Council , owner of the ice hockey team for the San Diego Gulls, and from 1967 to 1972 he was the first owner of the San Diego Rockets (NBA), which is now based in Houston . His teams were among the first to use the San Diego International Sports Center . The hall was designed by Mark L. Faddis and built by the Trepte Construction Company. The foundation stone was laid on November 18, 1965. The hall was opened on November 17, 1966. It was initially called the San Diego International Sports Center . Four years later it was renamed the San Diego Sports Arena , which remained until 2004.

In 2004 the event hall received its first name sponsor . The property -Sparunternehmen iPayOne from Carlsbad , San Diego County , paid 2.5 million dollars for five years. In 2007 iPayOne was released from the contract for non-payment and returned to San Diego Sports Arena . The most outstanding sporting event was the boxing match for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) heavyweight title between Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton on March 31, 1973 at the San Diego Sports Arena . Ali broke his lower jaw at the beginning and lost after 12 rounds by losing points ( split decision ). It was one of his five defeats in a total of 61 fights.

In addition to sports, the hall is used for a wide variety of entertainment events such as ice cream, stand-up comedy and family shows as well as circus events and concerts. The concert of the band Dio on December 6, 1985 was recorded here and published in June 1986 on the live album Intermission .
