The Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza (formerly Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza ) is a multi-purpose arena in the US city of Wilkes-Barre in the state of Pennsylvania . The arena serves as the home ground for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins ice hockey team from the American Hockey League (AHL). There are 8,050 seats available for ice hockey games and up to 10,000 seats for concerts. The arena is owned by Lucerne County and operated by the Spectacor Management Group (SMG).
history
The multi-purpose arena opened under the name Northeastern Pennsylvania Civic Arena and Convention Center on November 13, 1999 when the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins played their first home game. The naming rights were later acquired by First Union and the venue was renamed First Union Arena at Casey Plaza . The AHL All-Star Classic was played here for the first time in 2001 , when the two teams of the Canadian AHL All-Stars and PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars met. After another name change of the Arena ( Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza ), was announced in November 2009 that Mohegan Sun , a Native American gaming from Connecticut , has secured the naming rights to the arena for the next ten years.
From 2002 to 2009 the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Pioneers from arenafootball2 also played their home games in the arena. In addition to sporting events, the hall is also used for freestyle motocross races, monster truck races ( Monster Jam ), basketball shows by the Harlem Globetrotters and concerts .
