The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Pioneers were an arena football team from Wilkes-Barre ( Pennsylvania that) in the af2 played. The Pioneers played their home games in the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza .
history
The Pioneers were founded in 2001 and took part in af2 the following year . The owner was the Smith Sports International Group and former NFL quarterback, Super Bowl winner and multiple ProBowler Johnny Unitas, who died of a heart attack a short time later.
The team has played quite successfully over the years. Only in 2002 and 2003 was the postseason missed. Then you could make the playoffs perfect six years in a row. In 2007 and 2009 the ArenaCup was even reached, but lost both finals. They were denied a title until their end.
In their franchise history, the Pioneers won 84 games out of 128 regular season games. In addition, there are 9 more wins from 15 playoff games. Most of the spectators came to their very first game on April 6, 2002 against the Greensboro Prowlers , when 8,200 spectators found their way into the stadium.
Af2 was dissolved at the end of the season. The owners of the Pioneers tried to find a buyer for the franchise. Since this did not work, the team was disbanded.
