The San Diego Gulls were an American ice hockey team from San Diego , California . They played in the West Coast Hockey League from 1995 to 2003 and in the ECHL from 2003 to 2006 .
history
In 1995, the San Diego Gulls replaced the team of the same name from the International Hockey League , which was relocated to Los Angeles , California after the 1994/95 season and was renamed Los Angeles Ice Dogs . The Gulls won the Taylor Cup five times in their eight years in the West Coast Hockey League . On December 11, 2002, Danielle Dube became the third female goalkeeper for a professional men's team. Dube played as goalkeeper for the San Diego Gulls in their 4-1 loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs . In 2003, the Pacific Division's WCHL was integrated into the ECHL, formerly known as the East Coast Hockey League. In 2004, the Gulls became the ECHL subsidiary of the Colorado Avalanche . On June 29, 2006, the Gulls were disbanded and their players became available as free agents .
During their WCHL stint and early years of the East Coast Hockey League, the Gulls from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, were coached by former student Steve Martinson . Martinson left the Gulls and went on to coach the Rockford IceHogs of the UHL . Martin St. Amour succeeded the Gulls before the 2004/05 season. St. Amour resigned mid-2005-06 and was replaced as assistant coaches by former Gulls players Jamie Black and BJ MacPherson .
