The Maine Mariners are an American ice hockey franchise from Portland , Maine , that has played in the ECHL since the 2018/19 season . It acts as the farm team of the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League and plays its home games in the Cross Insurance Arena .

history

In 2016, the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League (AHL) were relocated to Springfield and renamed the Springfield Thunderbirds . As a result, several investor groups tried to fill the gap in Portland and re-establish a team in the city. This was finally achieved by the telecommunications company Comcast Spectacor in June 2017, which bought the rights to the Alaska Aces and at the same time announced that it would relocate the franchise to Portland. The Aces had participated in the ECHL game operations up to the 2016/17 season , but had to cease operations due to financial bottlenecks.

In September 2017, after a fan vote, the name Mariners was announced, while the other four options were lost to Lumberjacks , Watchmen , Puffins and Wild Blueberries . The team takes on the legacy of the Maine Mariners of the same name , who participated in the AHL game from 1977 to 1992. As the first general manager was Daniel Brière presented while Riley Armstrong took over the office of the head coach. In April 2018, the Mariners announced that they would be cooperating with the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL) and thus with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL .
