The Newfoundland Growlers are a Canadian ice hockey franchise from St. John's in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador that has been playing in the ECHL since the 2018/19 season . It acts as the farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League and plays its home games at the Mile One Center .

history

With the St. John's Maple Leafs and the two incarnations of the St. John's IceCaps , the city of St. John's had a professional ice hockey team from the American Hockey League (AHL) for more than 25 years . This changed in 2017 when the second IceCaps franchise moved to Laval and has since been operating as Rocket de Laval . As a result, attempts were made to fill the gap with a team from the ECHL or a junior team from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . Eventually, Glenn Stanford , a local businessman and long-time ice hockey official, received ECHL's approval for a new team in St. John's. He had previously been Vice President of Hockey Operations at St. John's Maple Leafs and President of the Hamilton Bulldogs . After Stanford reached an arbitration proceeding with the owners of St. John's Edge , the city 's basketball team , over the rights to use the Mile One Center , ECHL officially announced the expansion in March 2018.

The name Newfoundland Growlers was announced in May 2018 , before Ryane Clowe was introduced as the team's first head coach in June of the same year . It was also announced that the Growlers are cooperating in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs and in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies .

In the debut season, Clowe resigned as head coach for health reasons and handed over the office to his previous assistant John Snowden in January 2019 . The team prevailed in the playoff finals series against the Toledo Walleye and won the Kelly Cup in its premiere season .
