Two franchises operated under the name that have been or are active in various minor leagues since 1952 .
The first team was founded in 1952 and took part in the International Hockey League until 1990 when it was transferred to the Albany Choppers . At the same time, the Flint Generals were relocated to Fort Wayne and took over the identity of the first franchise.
history
Since their founding in 1952, the Fort Wayne Komets played in the International Hockey League until the team was relocated to Albany in 1990 and played there one season as Albany Choppers before it was disbanded. Also in 1990, however, the Flint Generals were relocated to Fort Wayne and took on the identity of the first comet. Thus, the franchise continued to play in the International Hockey League until 1999 when it moved to the Colonial Hockey League , which later operated as the United Hockey League and the International Hockey League . After a two-year stay in the Central Hockey League , the Komets changed league again in 2012 and have been playing in the ECHL ever since .
The Fort Wayne Komets are one of the hockey teams in North America, along with the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League and the Original Six from the National Hockey League , that have played the longest under the same name and in the same city.
