The San Antonio Dragons were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in San Antonio , Texas . Their home ground was the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and occasionally the Alamodome .

history

The franchise of the Peoria Rivermen of the International Hockey League in 1996 to San Antonio, Texas, relocated and renamed San Antonio Dragons. In their first season, the 1996/97 season, the Dragons reached first place in the Midwest Division of the IHL and thus qualified for the play-offs. There they lost in the second round and were eliminated. Furthermore, the players of the San Antonio Dragons wore completely white jerseys for home games and completely black jerseys for away games in the 1996/97 season. The reason for this was that the desired jersey design was not yet available.

The club competed with the Iguanas from the Central Hockey League, which were also located in San Antonio . Even because of this competitive situation, the club was unable to achieve the audience numbers it had hoped for. After another season in the International Hockey League, the Dragons broke up in the summer of 1998 due to financial problems.
