The Columbus Checkers were an American ice hockey franchise of the International Hockey League based in Columbus , Ohio . The Checkers' venue was the Ohio Expo Fairgrounds Coliseum .

history

The Columbus Checkers were founded in 1966 as a franchise of the International Hockey League . The new team played their first game on October 12, 1966 in a preparation game against the Chicago Blackhawks from the National Hockey League . In the four years of its existence, it never got beyond the first playoff round, with the playoffs not even being reached in the 1966/67 and 1969/70 seasons. Due to the low average attendance and the resulting financial problems, those responsible decided in 1970 to let the franchise become inactive. A year later it was reactivated by the California Golden Seals as their new farm team and renamed the Columbus Golden Seals .
