The Kansas City Blades were an ice hockey team in the International Hockey League . They played at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City , Missouri , USA from 1990 to 2001 . From 1991 to 1996 the Blades were a farm team of the San Jose Sharks from the NHL , from the 1999/2000 season that of the Vancouver Canucks .

The Blades began playing in the International Hockey League at the beginning of the 1990/91 season . After missing the playoffs in the first year, the team finished its second season in first place in the division. Before the 1991/92 season had been a farm team -Vertrag with the newly founded NHL - Franchise of the San Jose Sharks completed. Under the later Sharks coach Kevin Constantine , the team reached the final of the Turner Cup , where the Muskegon Lumberjacks were beaten 4-0 in the series. The following year they failed in the second playoff round. The 1993/94 season ended despite a positive season balance already after the regular season, before Jim Wiley , another later coach of the Sharks, led the team again to the Turner Cup final, where they lost to the Denver Grizzlies . Due to the contract with San Jose, Artūrs Irbe , Wiktor Koslow , Patrick Lalime , Sandis Ozoliņš , Ville Peltonen , Mike Rathje and Ray Whitney , all later NHL professionals, played in Kansas City. At the end of the 1995/96 season , the cooperation ended when the Sharks took over a new farm team with the Kentucky Thoroughblades .
After the Sharks left, the Blades could not build on their previous successes. At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season , the Blades entered into a cooperation with the Vancouver Canucks . In the last two seasons of the IHL one missed the entry into the playoffs clearly. After the dissolution of the IHL at the end of the 2000/01 season , the franchise of the Kansas City Blades was dissolved, as you did not get a game license for the American Hockey League .
