John A. Carter (born May 3, 1963 in Winchester , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 244 games for the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League between 1982 and 1995 on the position of the left winger .
Career
Carter initially studied for four years from 1982 to 1986 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . There the left winger played together with Adam Oates and made it into the Second and First All-Star Team of the Eastern College Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons .
Even so, Carter was not selected in any NHL Entry Draft , and so he was only signed undrafted by the Boston Bruins from the NHL during the 1985/86 season . The American stayed there until the end of the 1990/91 season . However, he never managed to establish himself in the Bruins roster for an entire season and found himself again and again on the farm team in the American Hockey League , the Maine Mariners . Carter was part of the squad when Boston reached the final for the Stanley Cup in the 1989/90 season, where the team was defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in five games. In the summer of 1991, Carter moved to the newly formed San Jose Sharks as a free agent . There he played for two years and was also mainly used in the International Hockey League with the farm team, the Kansas City Blades . With these he won the Turner Cup in the 1991/92 season . After the 1992/93 season he left the Sharks and played for the Providence Bruins and the Worcester IceCats in the AHL in the following two years . After the 1994/95 season he ended his career.
International
For his home country Carter took part in the 1986 World Cup in the Soviet capital Moscow , where he finished sixth with the Americans. In nine tournament games he scored three times, including one goal.
