The games of the 51st Ice Hockey World Championships and 62nd Ice Hockey European Championships for men in 1986 took place in the countries of the Soviet Union , the Netherlands and Spain .

26 teams took part. The only innovation in the hosting of this year's World Championships was the increase in the C group from 8 to 10 teams. The reason was the growing waiting list of ice hockey nations that wanted to play at a World Cup. That is why it was decided to introduce a D group for the coming World Cup. The C group should then play with 8 teams again. A total of 26 teams took part in the world championships.

The USSR managed to take revenge for the defeats suffered the previous year. Without losing a point, the hosts became ice hockey world champions for the 20th time, making them the sole record holder. Furthermore, the meanwhile 24th European Championship title could be added. Disappointing, however, was the performance of the defending champion from Czechoslovakia, who had to go into the relegation round for the first time in its history and only finished fifth in the end.
